Lanju Museum in Greater Bay Area, China

Nestled along the glistening coastline, the museum stands proudly, akin to a lighthouse, amidst the breath-taking expanse of the Greater Bay Area. Six elegant white volumes seamlessly unite, encircling a central courtyard connected by graceful bridges. Above a tranquil water surface adorned with lotus-shaped canopies, the volumes exude an air of artistic allure, transforming into vibrant beacons at night, drawing visitors’ eyes and bestowing upon the sea a landmark to cherish.

Within the museum’s harmonious design, the six volumes are grouped into three pavilions. One pavilion takes center stage, housing the main exhibitions, while the other two focus on thematic displays, complemented by amenities such as a café, shop, and an auditorium, befitting a world-class museum. A crowning gem of the architectural masterpiece is the rooftop terrace, situated at an elevated 17 meters, offering a stage for performances that overlook the mesmerizing sea.

Stepping inside, visitors are captivated by a unique multilevel journey, guided by artificial contours that lead them through the exhibition spaces. Floor-to-ceiling glass embraces every angle, providing uninterrupted views of the sea at varying heights. Amidst the artistic terrain lie enchanting courtyards adorned with carefully selected trees, a testament to nature’s symbiosis with the arts.

These enchanting courtyards serve a dual purpose, not only orchestrating the natural light indoors but also playing an integral role in the museum’s innovative rainwater drainage system. The rainwater cascades down from the lush green roofs, traversing underground channels before being released into the semi-circular water pools enveloping the museum. Inspired by the gentle ripples of water, these pools serve as a reflective mirror for the building, while also offering protection from unforeseen floods that the sea may bring.

The museum’s design thoughtfully considers the surrounding landscape, embracing it as an integral part of the experience. To the west, an enchanting amphitheatre invites visitors to unwind amidst artificial landforms. These earthy contours extend northward, cleverly concealing the car park while embracing it. Towards the northeast, a welcoming grid of trees beckons guests to the entrance, providing respite beneath their verdant canopies. A charming footpath leads to the serene mangrove in the southeast, seamlessly connecting the museum with the picturesque seashore.

But the museum’s dedication to the environment doesn’t end there. A living canvas of green roofs drapes the structure, adorned with a vibrant tapestry of flora and fauna, reducing its ecological footprint while offering a stunning 75% green coverage for the entire site.

In this masterpiece of architectural brilliance and ecological mindfulness, the museum stands as a testament to humanity’s harmonious coexistence with nature, beckoning visitors from near and far to immerse themselves in the art and embrace the beauty that surrounds them.
