Thesis ‘More than a channel’

Abstract

‘More than a Channel’ is a thorough analysis and design approach for a site located in Edinburgh’s South-East Wedge. It highlights the careful consideration of geological, hydrological, ecological, and user dynamics, resulting in the identification of unique natural attributes such as sloping hills, a central valley, and waterways.

The design approach focuses on extending the primary watercourse to enhance connectivity and creating a sinuous wetland to reflect natural processes. Over a span of five decades, the design strategy evolves, adapting vegetation and pathways to nurture a mature ecosystem and embrace seasonal changes.

The central wetland serves as a focal point, evolving with the seasons and weather to embody nature’s beauty. Detailed plans and sections showcase boardwalks, pathways, and viewpoints, offering visitors an immersive experience that encourages recreation and reflection.

Overall, the design aims to foster a perpetual bond between human well-being and nature’s rhythms, providing spaces for year-round recreation, social interaction, and peaceful contemplation. It invites individuals to reconnect with nature and experience its diverse sensations throughout the seasons.
