Wenxing Bridge in Jiangxi, China

The design of the Wenxing Bridge draws inspiration from the historically floating bridge on site, evoking the graceful alignment of traditional boats from one side to another. Our innovative interpretation of this historical reference has transformed these boats into the very form of the bridge, blending a contemporary language and approach seamlessly.

Beyond its utilitarian function, the Wenxing Bridge serves as a harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape. Lush biodiversity thrives upon it, with carefully selected species of trees creating a vibrant green corridor, enriching the experience of those journeying across.

This bridge is more than a mere crossing; it has been thoughtfully designed to become an urban space of multifunctional significance. Delightful viewpoints with comfortable seating invite people to unwind and savor the picturesque landscape. Charming kiosks dot the bridge, offering beverages and retail options, while nearby spaces accommodate tables and chairs, providing a unique gathering experience in this picturesque setting.

The thoughtful integration extends to cyclists and runners, as the bridge incorporates a dedicated cycle lane that seamlessly joins surrounding cycling routes, doubling as a scenic running track. Organic footpaths meander around gentle mounds of greenery and trees, encouraging a leisurely pace for those crossing over.

On the northern side of the bridge, the Linjiang building, an exquisite wooden structure, rests upon a plinth, descending gracefully to the river and connecting to Xianggan wharf. These landscaped terraces offer idyllic spots to bask in the views of the Heshui River and foster interactions with biodiversity. The building’s oval shape distinguishes it from the urban fabric, marking the end of the evocative ‘Old City Memory Display Belt.’

The Linjiang building’s façade, characterized by a sequence of vertical and horizontal wood slats, exudes a sense of lightweight elegance, casting intricate shadows akin to ornamental shelves. Within these voids, a delightful array of plants and flowers can be arranged, creating captivating compositions reminiscent of a river-facing billboard. Additionally, these plants play a dual role, enhancing indoor comfort by recycling the air through their transpiration.

A harmonious conversation between the Linjiang building and Wenxing Bridge is achieved through their shared materiality and contemporary approach. The sinuous curves of both structures gracefully blend with nature, eschewing a stark contrast. The discerning use of subtle materials like wood conveys an impression of structural delicacy without compromising overall scale and significance.
